Smarter Spending: Using Data Analysis To Drive Infrastructure Investment Decisions

Data analysis around pipe condition, inflow & infiltration (I&I), and overflows can build a case for the approval of infrastructure funding in budget planning.

Municipalities and utilities in the U.S. have historically underinvested in the assets within their water and wastewater networks. Aging infrastructure and decades of deferred maintenance have created particular challenges in wastewater collection, as pipes, joints, and grouting in the sewer collection network deteriorate. As a result, they become susceptible to breaks, cracks, and the ingress of tree roots and other material, leading to blockages, obstructions, and ultimately inflow and infiltration (I&I) of groundwater and rainwater.
