Smart infrastructure is the latest evolution in metering infrastructure. Todd Stoker, Director of Product Management for Aclara, a smart infrastructure AMI company that serves water, gas and electric utilities recently sat down with Water Online to discuss this movement.
“If you look back 15 years, people were doing automated meter reading to get a single data read or to create a monthly bill. Then all of a sudden, you realize you can do a lot more with the data,” said Stoker. “Suddenly, you start being able to drive conservation, you start being able to find leaks within customers’ homes. Smart infrastructure is really the next step in doing that.”
Aclara is focused on optimizing the utility’s investment in a fixed network system so that they have their entire service territory covered with a key infrastructure. Then as they begin accumulating new data, utility managers can make smarter decisions on what they’re doing with their distribution systems.
The Company is also focused on flexibility in enhancing their core product “One of the things that we’re showing at the show is a remote antenna option that allows you to install our modules in places where you had to jump through hoops to get a read from in the past.
