Seattle Public Utilities Selects Innovyze Smart Water Network Modeling Technology

InfoWater To Support Comprehensive Geospatial Water Infrastructure Management for Washington’s Largest Waterworks

Innovyze, a leading global innovator of business analytics software and technologies for smart wet infrastructure, recently announced that Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) in Washington has chosen the company’s industry-leading InfoWater to support its large-scale, enterprise-wide geospatial water distribution network modeling and management needs. The purchase will enable SPU to address critical planning, design, operational, and water quality issues with maximum effectiveness as it optimizes capital improvement programs and improves customer service.

SPU delivers about 140 million gallons of water per day to about 1.4 million people within the greater Seattle metropolitan region of King County and portions of southern Snohomish County. Its water supply system, the largest in Washington State, consists of surface water reservoirs on the Cedar River and South Fork Tolt River and two well fields providing groundwater to supplement the two surface water supply sources during peak demand seasons and emergencies. It includes state-of-the-art water treatment facilities for the Cedar and South Fork Tolt source waters, and in-town disinfection facilities at reservoirs and well sites. The regional and sub-regional water transmission systems include approximately 193 miles of pipeline, seven covered reservoirs, 15 pump stations, six elevated tanks and standpipes, and 129 wholesale customer taps with meters. The distribution system contains more than 1,680 miles of water mains, six covered reservoirs, 16 pump stations, six elevated tanks and standpipes, 21,000 valves, and 18,920 fire hydrants, as well as more than 188,000 service lines and meters serving individual residential and non-residential properties in the retail service area.

Jon Ford, P.E., Senior Water System Engineer for SPU, said, “SPU is excited to use InfoWater to enhance our hydraulic modeling and GIS activities. InfoWater’s direct integration with ArcGIS will allow us to more quickly update models, perform modeling analyses, and create GIS data for displaying and analyzing modeling results. We’re looking forward to using the many time-saving tools available in InfoWater.”

Built atop ArcGIS (Esri, Redlands, CA), InfoWater seamlessly integrates sophisticated predictive analytics, systems dynamics and optimization functionality directly within the powerful ArcGIS setting. From fire flow and water quality simulations, valve criticality and energy cost analysis to pressure zone management and advanced Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm optimization, the InfoWater product suite comes equipped with everything water utility owner-operators need to best plan, design, operate, secure and sustain their distribution systems.

The software also serves as a base platform for advanced smart network modeling, operation, capital planning and asset management extensions. Among these critical applications are IWLive (real-time operations and security); InfoWater UDF (unidirectional flushing); CapPlan (risk-based capital planning); InfoMaster and InfoMaster Mobile (asset integrity management and condition assessment); InfoWater MSX (multi-species, temperature, and particle transport/deposition modeling); InfoWater BTX (event/particle backtracking); InfoSurge (surge/transient analysis); Sustainability (carbon footprint calculation); BalanceNet (real-time energy management and operations optimization); PressureWatch (real-time network hydraulic integrity monitoring); QualWatch (real-time network water quality integrity monitoring); DemandWatch (water demand forecasting); DemandAnalyst (real-time water demand and diurnal pattern estimations); and SCADAWatch (real-time business intelligence and network performance monitoring).

“SPU is a symbol of quality and excellence in the water and wastewater network modeling arena,” said Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., BCEEM, NAE, Hon.D.WRE, Dist.D.NE, F.ASCE, President, COO and Chief Technical Officer of Innovyze. “It operates and manages an increasingly complex and demanding water infrastructure, and has retained its industry-leading position through continual innovation. We’re proud that SPU chose Innovyze as its solution partner — a choice that reconfirms the incomparable standing of our state-of-the-art GIS-centric modeling solutions. Our smart water technology helps water utilities solve some of their most pressing challenges, allowing them to get up to speed, realize many efficiencies and tap the full potential of their water infrastructures in a short time. It also makes it easy for them to capitalize on investments in talent, data and resources to create better work processes and respond more quickly to customers’ ever increasing needs. We look forward to helping this leadership enterprise achieve many more decades of engineering excellence, along with breakthrough cost savings.”
