NSF International Certifies Mesopaper, A New Filtration Medium

Mesofilter’s Mesopaper is independently tested and certified to effectively reduce lead to below the U.S. EPA action level and arsenic V to below the U.S. EPA and WHO health advisory levels

Global public health organization NSF International has certified the first paper drinking water filtration medium that reduces arsenic V (or pentavalent arsenic) and lead to below the action levels set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Mesofilter’s Mesopaper , which can be used as a filtration medium in various types of residential drinking water filters, has been certified to NSF/ANSI 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units – Health Effects, the American National Standard for drinking water treatment units. As part of the NSF International certification, Mesopaper has been verified to reduce arsenic to below the EPA and WHO health advisory levels of 10 parts per billion (ppb). The material is also NSF International certified for lead reduction to 10 ppb or less, which is lower than the U.S. EPA action level of 15 ppb.

Most arsenic enters the drinking water supply either from natural deposits in the earth or from industrial and agricultural pollution. According to WHO, more than 200 million people worldwide might be chronically exposed to arsenic in drinking water. Long-term exposure can lead to chronic arsenic poisoning and to certain cancers.

Many countries have adopted regulations in recent years that limit the use of lead in the manufacture of residential plumbing products. However, older fixtures and water lines containing lead are still in service in many areas and can potentially contribute lead into a home’s drinking water supply.

“Hundreds of millions of people worldwide drink contaminated water and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most hazardous threats to human health are arsenic and lead,” said Liangjie Dong, CEO of Mesofilter Inc. “Our goal is to provide access for anyone, anywhere, to safe drinking water. Mesopaper represents a breakthrough in filtration technology and can be molded into various shapes such as pour-through filters, straw filters and industrial filtration cartridges at a fraction of the cost and complexity. Simply, Mesopaper makes filtration easier.”

In addition to verifying the lead and arsenic reduction claims, certification to NSF/ANSI 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units – Health Effects means that the product has been tested to ensure the safety of materials that come in contact with drinking water. Certification also includes annual audits of the manufacturing facility to ensure the products continue to meet the standard.

“When consumers see the NSF mark on a product, they can have confidence that the product has been independently tested and certified to do what the manufacturer says it will do,” said David Purkiss, Vice President of Water Systems at NSF International. “NSF International’s independent certification of this new material to NSF/ANSI 53 means the water filtration industry now has a new filtration medium that is verified to reduce both lead and pentavalent arsenic (or arsenic V) to levels set by the EPA and WHO.”
