Advanced Membrane Systems (AMS) was contracted through Reiss
Environmental Inc. (REI) to design and build a membrane pilot system that
could be used on virtually any water source. The idea was that this pilot should
be easily transportable to any site and be able to utilize several different
membrane configurations to test nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and seawater
reverse osmosis.
The unit itself has two complete membrane trains with a third, more portable
train (single element) to test one, two or three "pass" system designs. There is a
complete cleaning skid included as well for the entire system. All of the
components are housed in a 32-foot trailer. Included in the trailer, along with
the process components (including two chemical feed stations) is an office that
can also be used as a laboratory in the front with sink and worktable.
The self contained trailer is equipped to operate off a single 480 volt, 3-phase
power feed that can be distributed for the low pressure equipment as well as
operate the high pressure sea water membrane system. Flexibility also included
the option to run up to eight membranes in a single pass to allow piloting the
Tampa Bay sea water desalination reverse osmosis process design.
