Manganese Removal For Avon, Massachusetts Water Supply Awarded To Hungerford & Terry

Clayton, NJ - The town of Avon, MA has awarded Hungerford & Terry a new contract for their pressure filtration system that utilizes GreensandPlus from the Inversand Company. The pressure filtration system removes manganese to 0.03 mg/L, in the finished water, well below the MCL of 0.05 mg/L.

The goal of the pilot test was to demonstrate a process efficiency of at least 95% and Hungerford & Terry easily exceeded that with a 98% result.

The four suppliers that took part in the pilot study included: Koch and Zenon (now GE), for membrane process equipment, as well as Layne Christensen and Hungerford & Terry, for pressure filtration equipment. The engineering firm Amory Engineers, P.C., of Duxbury, MA was responsible for the overall project and selected Hungerford & Terry as the filtration supplier after the pilot study was completed (pilot study attached).

Summary— Hungerford & Terry Equipment/Process
To treat a flow of 575 gpm, Hungerford & Terry utilized two (2) 9-foot diameter GreensandPlus filters with electric-operated valves and a NEMA 4x stainless-steel control panel housing a Fanuc Ethernet CPU plus a 12-inch color, touchscreen panel-mounted operator interface terminal.

The pressure filter system engineered by Hungerford & Terry used sodium hypochlorite as the oxidant at the dosage rate of 1.5 mg/L. The media for the filtration system was a 1.5-ft. deep bed of GreensandPlus in combination with a 1.5-ft. deep bed of anthracite.

The system ran at backwash intervals of 5 days. With GreensandPlus, a higher differential pressure was possible than with most ordinary filter media, resulting in added process efficiencies for the plant.

The longer run times and reduced backwash frequency achieved by the Hungerford & Terry system resulted in the high efficiency score. For more information please see the complete final pilot study compiled by Amory Engineers, Duxbury, MA.
