Controlled Transfer Of Water Results In Cost-Saving For Customers

In January, Sweetwater Authority (Authority) conducted a controlled transfer of water from Loveland Reservoir in Alpine, CA, to Sweetwater Reservoir in Spring Valley, CA. The transfer captured 2.7 billion gallons of local water. This same amount of water is enough to help supply our customers with 12-18 months of water.

By moving water to Sweetwater Reservoir, the Authority is now able to treat and distribute it to our customers at a much lower cost than importing water from outside the region. This year’s transfer has saved our customers $9.1M compared to the cost of expensive imported water.

The Authority initiated a controlled transfer of water between its two reservoirs on Monday, January 11, 2021 in order to secure additional water sources for our customers. Water that leaves Loveland Reservoir is transferred through the Sweetwater River channel and captured at Sweetwater Reservoir where it can be treated and distributed to Authority customers at a lower cost than importing water.

The Authority conducts controlled transfers periodically when a variety of conditions are met, and coordinates with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure that environmental needs are met. A similar water transfer was last conducted in February 2019.
