City Of Palo Alto Adopts Royal Environmental's ecoSep Oil/Water Separation Technology

The City of Palo Alto, in a continuing effort to upgrade and maintain it's municipally owned facilities, specified the ecoSep high efficiency oil/water separation technology for it's Fire Department Stations No.4 & No.5.

Existing fueling/wash pads discharge directly to the sanitary sewer system. Palo Alto's Industrial Waste Program as well as permits issued by the Environmental Compliance Division, require pretreatment before discharge.

Prior to the above referenced project, treatment of these industrial non-point source discharges had been addressed with large volume modified septic tanks. While the unit cost of the modified septic tank is approximately one third the cost of the ecoSep technology, annual maintenance cost savings using the ecoSep technology will surpass the initial up-front cost in approximately three to four years based on pollutant loading for similar pad applications.

Palo Alto Industrial Waste Program Management chose the ecoSep technology after consideration of the following:

  • Cost competitive with previous system after initial 3 to 4 years of operational maintenance cost savings with additional annual savings each year thereafter.
  • The highest industry standard for certified free oil removal <5ppm (see uniform testing protocol) and removal of all contaminated particulate >30 microns.
  • ecoSep's standard integration of the unique ecoStop spill control technology.
  • Option to retrofit the ecoSep's Automatic Oil Drawoff Devise (ADD) for collecting all liquid
