American Water Employees Log Over 5,000 Volunteer Hours During Month Of Service Events

Month of Service Events Make Impact in Local Communities Across 12 states

American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, held its companywide AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service employee volunteer event in September. More than 1,100 American Water employees stepped up to help their neighbors, participating in more than 90 different community volunteer projects and providing a record-breaking 5,100 hours of service.

“American Water is committed to building strong communities everywhere we serve, even beyond delivering safe, clean and reliable water and water services to our customers every day. Our AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service is a great opportunity for our employees to support these communities where we work and live,” said Susan Story, president and chief executive officer. “They are our neighbors, our family and our friends, and we want to create measurable and lasting impacts in their lives.”

AmerICANs in Action! continues the company’s efforts to create a lasting, positive impact for the customers and the communities the company serves as part of its ongoing Corporate Responsibility program. In its ninth year, this effort encourages teams of employees across the U.S. to volunteer in the communities where they live and work.

Employees demonstrated a diverse range of skills through projects that included rejuvenating a park in Georgia, preparing toiletry kits for domestic violence survivors in New Jersey, removing invasive honeysuckle in Missouri, serving dinner at a homeless shelter in Pennsylvania, cleaning kennels at an animal shelter in California, sprucing up a city park in Virginia, assisting at a food pantry in Illinois and assembling playground equipment in Tennessee. Many employees also volunteered at food banks and hosted blood drives, while others teamed up with their local Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity and United Way.
