With lift stations set among households and a pristine lake, failure is not an option for the Valley Rural Utility Company in Lawrenceburg, IN. The old lift stations were costing up to $30,000/year to maintain, due to poor design and persistent clogging. A new Flygt N-Pump has changed the utility’s course, however, proving with one (easy) installation the cost savings that can be gained through advanced impeller technology and remote SCADA operability. The utility has since ordered eight more TOP Stations containing the N-Pumps from Flygt, a brand of Xylem, Inc., because of the host of advantages that were proven in the field. “We’re going to save a lot of money and the lake’s going to be clean,” summarized the utility’s general manager, Floyd Ogden. Along with Xylem’s Elisha Winters and Randy Bard, Ogden also provided plenty of specifics. Cited benefits include:

  • Electricity costs reduced by half
  • Self-cleaning, automatic impeller design eliminates clogging/overflows
  • Minimal installation time
  • System visibility and control “from home”
  • Savings on O&M, overtime pay, and outsourced pumper trucks
  • Clean, odor-free operation
  • A community that is “ecstatic about the project”
