Hach's TSS portable Hand-held instrument is ideal for remote monitoring in municipal and industrial wastewater, drinking water and river monitoring. In wastewater, the TSS Portable in the suspended solids mode provides an easy way to check the sludge blanket level for both depth and concentration. This information can be used to set recycle rates or indicate bulking conditions (poor settleability). The TSS Portable can also indicate if there is a rag layer (fluffy sludge) above the blanket, and quantify the concentration-again indicating sludge settleability issues or quantifying results from polymer/flocculant dosing. Suspended solids and turbidity measurements at the clarifier effluent can be used to characterize activated sludge problems.

Hach's TSS portable Hand-held instrument is ideal for remote monitoring in municipal and industrial wastewater, drinking water and river monitoring. In wastewater, the TSS Portable in the suspended solids mode provides an easy way to check the sludge blanket level for both depth and concentration. This information can be used to set recycle rates or indicate bulking conditions (poor settleability). The TSS Portable can also indicate if there is a rag layer (fluffy sludge) above the blanket, and quantify the concentration-again indicating sludge settleability issues or quantifying results from polymer/flocculant dosing. Suspended solids and turbidity measurements at the clarifier effluent can be used to characterize activated sludge problems.
In drinking water applications, the TSS portable can spot check turbidity in the raw water or clarifier effluent. Also the filter backwash process can be monitored with the TSS portable providing real time turbidity measurements saving time and water.
The TSS Portable uses a unique multi-beam alternating light method with infrared diode system allowing for a broad measuring range for both suspended solids and turbidity. The turbidity is measured using a two channel 90º scattered light measurement in accordance with ISO 7027. The suspended solids measurement uses two emitters and four receivers at an angle of 90º for turbidity and 120º for suspended solids.
