E-Series™ Water Meter
Video: E-Series™ Water Meter
Everyone knows how important accurate water measurement is for municipalities and utilities. Yet millions of gallons of water — and millions more in revenue — are lost every year due to leaks and inaccurate, worn or damaged equipment.
That was then…this is now.
The E-Series Meter from Badger Meter is very different from the traditional small meter on the market today because it's an electronic, solid-state meter with no moving parts. Why is a meter with no moving parts a good thing for you? The lifespan of most meters is determined by the durability of the mechanical wear of their moving parts. But since the E-Series Meter has no moving parts, it's not prone to premature wear that can shorten its lifespan and produce inaccurate results. Rather, the life of the meter is based on an internal battery that can power the circuitry and display for up to 20 years.
In addition to its long lifespan, the E-Series Meter is incredibly accurate — within 1 percent over the range of flow rates — regardless of water quality, air bubbles, sand particles or pressure fluctuations. The E-Series Meter is available in three sizes: 5/8", 3/4", and 1", with maximum flow rates of 25, 35, and 55 gpm respectively.
How the E-Series Meter Works
The E-Series Meter utilizes ultrasonic transit-time based measurement technology. Ultrasonic transducers are mounted within the meter housing, along with a temperature sensor. Based on measurement of ultrasonic signals sent in rapid succession in both forward and reverse, and the temperature of the water, calculations are made to continuously determine the flow rate and consumption. Consumption is computed using the meter housing cross sectional area and the flow rate.
The meter is factory programmed to show the desired units of measure for both consumption and flow rate. At any time the display can be manually triggered to show rate of flow; it will then revert back to display of consumption. Reverse flow is easily determined, and an alarm icon appears when it occurs. A variety of other alarms are also displayed as icons along the bottom of the display. The E-Series Meter is designed to comply with applicable portions of ANSI/AWWA Standard C700.
Why the E-Series Meter
There are several obvious benefits that a municipality and utility will find with the E-Series Meter. For starters, the E-Series Meter is fully compatible with both the Badger Meter ORION and GALAXY systems, and also can function as a "local read" meter.
Additionally, its 20-year life span is not affected by the normal wear and tear encountered by mechanical meters. With no moving parts, the all-electronic meter will outlast conventional meters in most utility applications. At the same time, the high accuracy is sustained over the life of the meter rather than falling off due to mechanical wear. With water resource management becoming increasingly critical, a meter that accurately measures use over the life of the meter ensures that revenues are not compromised. And with the meter's relatively unobstructed flow of water, it is an ideal meter for applications with intermittent flow surges, slugs of debris, or long periods of disuse.
The robust design of the E-Series Meter is another example of the continuous improvement in durability, reliability and sustained accuracy you expect from Badger Meter.
