Municipal Drinking Water
Through advanced technologies in carbon adsorption, ultraviolet light disinfection, and ion exchange separation, Calgon Carbon provides a wide ranges of solutions to both long-standing and emerging challenges in the purification of municipal drinking water. The company has supplied approximately 70% of the granular activated carbon installed worldwide for drinking water treatment, and continues to develop new concepts for the efficient, effective, and low-cost removal of organic contaminants and microorganisms.

Disinfection Byproducts / VOC / THM / Pesticide / Organic Removal / Destruction
Many drinking water sources require removal of organic compounds for compliance with US EPA's Disinfection Byproducts rule as well as for other health and esthetic reasons. Calgon Carbon's products and services have been used for years as a cost-effective and reliable solution to Disinfection Byproducts/VOC/THM/Pesticide/Organic removal. Aditionally, Calgon Carbon can provide UV equipment for the oxidative destruction of many organic compounds.

Chloramine Removal
To avoid problems associated with the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), many municipalities are switching to chloramine instead of chlorine for disinfection of drinking water. As with chlorine, however, unreacted chloramines may persist in the treated water, causing taste and odor problems when the water is drawn. Although activated carbon has traditionally been used to remove tastes and odors associated with chloramine, Calgon Carbon offers a more effective method for chloramine removal.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia Inactivation
Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite present in almost all surface waters. When ingested through drinking water, it can cause cryptosporidiosis, an illness characterized by severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which can be fatal to individuals with suppressed immune systems. Calgon Carbon's low-cost disinfection solution utilizes ultraviolet (UV) radiation for Cryptosporidium and Giardia inactivation. The technology also provides a barrier against viruses, bacteria and protozoans, without creating any disinfection by-products.

Dechlorination
Treatment with chlorine is the most common method of providing a biologically safe drinking water supply. But chlorine products remaining in the water after treatment can cause undesirable taste and odor, and may contribute to health problems. Calgon Carbon Corporation has a dechlorination solution for the removal of residual chlorine in drinking water.

Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

MTBE Removal/Destruction
The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 brought methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) into our gas tanks to help reduce smog in our air. As a result of spills and refilling at pumping stations and leaky underground storage tanks (LUST's), an increase in MTBE contamination of surface water sources and groundwater has been noted. MTBE is considered a potential carcinogen and has been regulated by the EPA for clean-up of contaminated water. MTBE removal from drinking water poses a difficult challenge, but Calgon Carbon has developed Filtrasorb® 600 as a revolutionary activated carbon product optimized for removal of contaminants such as MTBE. Aditionally, Calgon Carbon can provide UV equipment for the oxidative destruction of MTBE.

NDMA Destruction
It is now believed that NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine), found in rocket fuels, is also produced in wastewater treatment plants. A known carcinogen, it presents a public health problem when even trace amounts are present in drinking water. Calgon Carbon has an ultraviolet (UV) solution for NDMA destruction.

Perchlorate Removal and Destruction
Medical studies have shown that when ingested, perchlorate - a key component of explosives, fireworks, matches, and rocket fuels - interferes with normal functioning of the thyroid gland. The compound is stable in groundwater, and is present in a significant number of water sources. Calgon Carbon has developed the first cost-effective solution for perchlorate removal and destruction.
