-
Case Study: Mountain Water & Sanitation District - Conifer, Colorado
Mountain Water & Sanitation District in Conifer, Colorado have a number of wells in their water system that contain concentrations of uranium in excess of the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)
-
Case Study: Wynstone Property Owners Association - Barrington, Illinois
The Wynstone Property Owners Association is located in Barrington, Illinois. The drinking water supply for Wynstone is pumped from deep sandstone wells, chlorinated, sent to storage and then to the distribution system. Naturally occurring radionuclides in Wynstone POA’s raw water source exceeds current Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL’s) for Gross Alpha Emitters and Combined Radium and Barium
-
Case Study: Sparta Township, New Jersey
PROBLEM: Feed concentration of uranium in water source was as high as 106.0 µg/L, exceeding MCL standard of 30 µg/L
-
Case Study: Wynstone, Illinois
PROBLEM: Water source contained barium levels of approximately 2.4 ppm

ABOUT
WATER QUALITY ANALYSIS
Water quality is based on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water. Therefore water quality analysis is the determination of the condition of water with regard to human consumption, industrial and domestic use as well as environmental water quality.
Water quality depends on the local geology and ecosystem, as well as human uses such as sewage dispersion, industrial pollution. In carrying out water quality analysis the following categories are used as baselines.
It is often important to analyze the quality of water after natural disasters because epidemics precede such calamities. This is usually carried out to ensure that water is safe and free from contaminates that arise because of the disturbance in the ecosystem.
Chemical Analysis to establish water hardness by assessing both calcium and magnesium levels, investigating presence of dissolved metals and metalloids eg lead, mercury and arsenic. Nutrient analysis for nitrogen and phosphorus is also carried out. Chlorine, sodium, and organic compounds are checked for as well.
Physical Analysis is done usually to evaluate Turbidity, color, and odour (Geosmin, 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB))
Biological Analysis mainly for Microorganisms such as fecal coliform bacteria (Escherichia coli), Cryptosporidium, and Giardia lamblia and viruses. Pathogens such as bacteria, virus’, ova and cysts, can be ingested through drinking water. Clear or clean water may still be microbiologically contaminated or contain chemical contaminants which are dangerous and hazardous to health, such as arsenic.
The quality of water is regulated by ISO is covered in the section of ICS 13.060, ranging from water sampling, water for drinking, industrial water, sewage or waste water, and examination of water for chemical, physical or biological properties. ICS 91.140.60 covers the standards of water supply systems.
