WHITE PAPERS AND CASE STUDIES

  • Case Study: Metropolitan Council Seeks Phosphorus Treatment Options In February 2004, Siemens Water Technologies, formerly USFilter, commenced a three-month service contract with the City of Rosemount, Minnesota for treatment of phosphorus in the effluent discharge from the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
  • White Paper: High-Efficiency Reverse Osmosis Treats Gray Water For Power Generation

Recycling of gray wastewater as boiler make- up water was the challenge where silica value was typically 85 ppm in this secondary treated wastewater. This paper describes a new design called the High-Efficiency Reverse Osmosis selected for that task, discusses the project technical considerations and highlights the actual performance of the system.

  • White Paper: The Leopold® Clari-DAF™ System For Membrane Pretreatment The idea that membranes could be used for solids removal and concentration in potable water treatment schemes has been known for hundreds of years. It has only been in the past 50 years or so that reverse osmosis membranes for treating brackish waters or sea water have been considered a cost-effective viable alternative. More recently, the membrane suppliers have produced low-pressure membranes that are applied in current treatment process schemes to enhance the water quality effluent required to meet additional regulatory guidelines
  • White Paper: Understanding Differences Of Boiler Feedwater Pretreatment Equipment

As a water treatment professional, there are several reasons for understanding the various types of boiler pretreatment equipment. It is helpful to grasp all selection criteria for the type of pretreatment. These factors are used for deciding what new equipment to install or why the existing equipment is appropriate or not appropriate. By Dave Christophersen, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies

  • Case Study: Healthcare Products Manufacturer Integrates Technologies To Reduce Costs, Promote Gentle Global Footprint A large healthcare products manufacturer in the United States needed to improve its environmental impact while substantially reducing excessive costs associated with municipal discharge and the operation of cooling towers. The existing purified water system included pre-filtration, activated carbon, two-pass reverse osmosis units and polishing deionization. By Siemens Water Technologies

ABOUT

DESALINATION

Desalination refers to any of several processes that are employed to remove salt and other minerals from saline water. Desalination purely is carried out to produce water that free from salt and other minerals for human consumption, domestic and industrial use. Desalination is applicable in ships and submarines. Irrigation water could be desalinated before use too.

Capacity and type of facility, location, feed water, labor, energy, financing, and concentrate disposal are all some of the factors used to determine the technique to be applied during desalination.

Distillation

The evaporation of water molecules from brine can be accelerated by heating the brine to its boiling point—100° C. Freeze Desalination is such that when salty water freezes, the ice crystallizes from pure water leaving the dissolved organic and inorganic solids (e.g., salt) in liquid pockets of high salinity brine.

In Solar Desalination the sun is used to heat a volume of water, which causes evaporation. Water from the volume is absorbed into the air where it condenses and then drips into a collection system. Electromagnetic Deionization where using a variety of electromagnetic effects, the ionic components of the salt are separated and removed from the solution.

In Reverse Osmosis a semi-permeable membrane is used where brine is subjected to very high pressure. Pure water will pass through the membrane leaving behind salt and other minerals.  Other methods of desalination are Chemical Desalination, SEA Panel, Reverse Osmosis, Electro dialysis, Ion Exchange, Multiple-Effect (ME) Evaporation, and Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) Distillation

Places where desalination has successfully been carried out include Beijing, Bangkok, Zaragoza, Phoenix, Tripoli, Jubail, Saudi Arabia,
