After the success of the first edition, the 2nd annual Drainage Rehabilitation & Wastewater Management conference returns and is scheduled to take place from 7-8 September 2015 in Muscat, Oman. Established as Oman’s largest gathering of drainage, wastewater, flood control and dam design and construction specialists the conference will continue to deliver high level presentations, new technologies and solutions for the advancement of storm water and wastewater management. The main challenge that exists in Oman is the lack of proper drainage systems, rain waters flooding in private and public properties leaving behind enormous amount of debris and dusts that would take weeks to clean and remove. In addition, each year these rains would leave behind many fatalities and hundreds of destroyed homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. The most important of these aforementioned challenges being the poorly managed drainage system in many cities in Oman and any small increase in rainfall will cause major flooding. The importance of wastewater as a potential source of water is apparent in countries that suffer from shortage of water especially to those in the arid zone such as the Sultanate of Oman. The non-conventional resources in Oman are from desalination of seawater, storage dams and recharge dams, and treated wastewater. Effective management of these resources plays an important role in providing an efficient, effective and sustainable form of overcoming challenges such as scarcity of water, floods etc. In a desert environment with scarce natural water resources, it is vital to maximise every water resource possible Oman is one of several countries located in an arid zone that is subject to flash flooding. Records show that major flash floods occurred in Oman in 1989, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007. Flooding in urban environments is not uncommon across the Sultanate of Oman. These floods often have damaging effects on infrastructure and can lead to fatalities. Local authorities and key consultants have identified inadequate planning and a lack of proper maintenance of drainage networks as the main challenges leading to urban floods. Dams also play an important role in limiting the extent of flood damages. Dams and reservoirs can be effectively and efficiently used to regulate flooding by temporarily storing the flood volume and releasing it later. Flood control is a significant purpose for many of the existing dams in the Sultanate and continues as a main purpose for the major dams in the country currently under construction. The Sultanate of Oman is one of the hottest countries in Middle East which exceeds the temperature ranges above 45 degrees during summer. The country was designed and constructed with no expectations of rains, however due to the effects of global warming there have been several storms and severe rains over the last few years. The drainage systems were built during the city's infrastructure developments with very little exit points for heavy rains, hence there will always be floods whenever there is rains, which leads to big traffic jams, casualties, deaths, property and vehicle damages costing millions of Rials for the government and insurance companies. In order to avoid further problems due to rains, the local authorities are looking at taking quick measures to overcome this issue and are looking at utilising efficient and effective solutions for remodeling the current drainage systems and also building new drainage systems. With this vision, Global Exhibitions and Conferences LLC (GEC) is proud to host the second annual Drainage Rehabilitation & Wastewater Management 2015 conference from 7-8 September 2015 in Muscat, Oman. This conference will showcase presentations and discussions in implementing strategies to design, construct operate and maintain effective drainage and sewerage networks in Oman, flood risk analysis, flood technology, flood protection, innovations in flood management, dam modeling and construction etc. The conference will consider all aspects of floods and will cover the causes of floods, their impacts on people, property and the environment, and portfolios of risk management measures. This conference will bring together the key stake holders from Local Authorities, Ministries, Contractors, Consultants, Technology/ Solution providers and more to discuss, strategise and implement an efficient solution for the drainage problem. Drainage Rehabilitation & Wastewater Management 2015 is aimed at looking at the most recent ideas, solutions and technologies related to centralised and decentralised systems for managing drainage infrastructure. The aim of Drainage Rehabilitation & Wastewater Management 2015 conference is to give delegates a flavor of the challenges faced by the authorities in delivering significant capital and operational investment programmes over the next few years in Oman. The conference is designed to bring together stakeholders to exchange experiences, demonstrate present potential, and improve the reliability of drainage modeling and to set-up the stage for the future developments in the Sultanate.
