ClearBlu Environmental is a wastewater system manufacturer selling specialized products for industrial, brewery, winery, and industrial wash bay customers. ClearBlu designs, builds and installs systems nationwide using sustainable technologies that consume less energy, less chemistry and require less maintenance than conventional systems. The company focuses on aerobic biodigestion technologies that provide complete digestion of organic material and do generate sludge. Highly effective self-cleaning screening and pH balancing systems are manufactured and tested in our California facility. Over 95% of system components are manufactured in the United States.

ClearBlu Environmental focuses on complete aerobic digestion of organic waste. This process is desirable over anaerobic digestion because it is fast, odor free, and prevents the need for any solids removal procedures. Aerobic digestion is desirable over DAF systems because it eliminates the need for costly chemical use and disposal. ClearBlu uses a unique aeration technology known as microbubble aeration, to achieve an aquatic environment which supports a bacteria population capable of complete digestion.  This is the key difference over conventional technologies.

ClearBlu builds package pH balancing systems for high strength wastewater that are robust and low maintenance.  High strength strength wastewater can easily blind pH sensors, even when they are insertion mounted in a pipe.  ClearBlu utilizes digital self-cleaning immersion sensors for reliability, longer periods between calibration and lower chemical usage.

Aerobic Biodigesters are the newest treatment methodology for high strength organic waste.  They are extremely efficient because microbes are exponentially more effective at digesting organics, fats/oils/greases and hydrocarbons if they have a fixed film media surface on which to live.

ClearBlu installs the most effective winery wastewater systems available. We are a design/build contractor. Utilizing biodigester technology, our capital costs for systems are significantly lower than other systems. Why? Because we are not utilizing municipal wastewater system technology to treat winery waste. They represent two different problems.

Winery waste water contains sugars and grape organics. This narrow profile means that it is easier to treat. Typically engineering firms will spend 10’s or 100’s of thousands of dollars designing systems that are overly complex, very costly to install, difficult to operate and expensive to maintain. By focusing on the content of the waste stream, ClearBlu installs systems with much smaller footprints. If ponds are utilized, less than 24% of the acreage engineers require will be needed. We eliminate chemical usage by eliminating DAF and SAF systems.

Most lift stations and basins require separate drain inlets that do little to keep out large solids such as gravel, branches and general litter than can destroy pumps. ClearBlu has developed a traffic rated grate system that utilizes perforated plate with 1/4″ holes. The grate sits in a heavy grate frame that embeds in concrete. By embedding the frame in concrete, traffic weight is carried by the frame and concrete and not the basin. This allows the basin to be secured and sealed to a poly or fiberglass basin.

    Jordan Winery was facing an expensive dredging operation to remove 14” of very heavy and condensed sludge from the primary treatment pond.     Merryvale Starmont chose to investigate alternate wastewater treatment equipment options to better fit with the company’s dedication to sustainable practices. The old turbine style surface aerators were replaced with UltraFine Bubble aerators, reducing the total horsepower from 37.5 down to 8. An automatic DO control system was also installed to increase energy conservation. The reduction in horsepower allowed the facility to claim over $13,000 in PG&E rebates in addition to the savings being realized by the more energy efficient motors.

    Scheid Vineyards, located in Greenfield, California, captures wastewater influent from the winery in three aeration ponds to supply the needed biological oxygen demand (BOD) to treat the effluent prior to being used for irrigation. In 2009, the wastewater plant processed over 8 million gallons of wastewater. The existing aeration system was inefficient and maintenance intensive leading the facility to explore alternative solutions.

    Real Ale Brewing Company (RABC) started as a small brewery working out of a commercial retail space. As the brewery outgrew their facility they purchased land on the outskirts of town and built a new brewery. Their production level was still low enough at this point for the city to allow direct access to sewer. As RABC continued to be successful and grow, a mandate from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality stated that the city must require the brewery to treat their wastewater in order to prevent overwhelming the city’s treatment system. RABC began the process of looking into available options for wastewater treatment. They had been introduced to ClearBlu Environmental at the Craft Brewers Conference in 2011 and after careful research the brewery selected ClearBlu to design and install a complete pretreatment and treatment system.

    ClearBlu provided duplexing in-ground lift stations and a self-cleaning waterfall hydroscreen for the brewery who self-installed the equipment.  ClearBlu design and instructions made it possible for the brewery to install the lift stations and screen themselves, as well as to have the screen stand fabricated locally.  ClearBlu lift stations are fabricated from fiberglass which resists deterioration from acidic wastewater and are self-cleaning.  Round basins can be stirred so that they never have to be cleaned out.

    Worthy Brewing approached ClearBlu Environmental at the 2011 Craft Brewers Conference. The brewery was still in its planning stages, but knew that some extent of wastewater treatment would need to be incorporated to satisfy city requirements. ClearBlu worked closely with the facility’s architect and engineers to incorporate plans and allocate space for a complete aerobic treatment system at the facility. Upon startup, the brewery was only required to implement a pre-treatment system, which includes solids screening, settling, and automatic pH balancing. They have all ruggedized equipment that will support their system through the brewery’s expected expansion.
