Case Study: TrojanUVMax™ Pro Series Brings Water Confidence Back To Beckwith Township

Home to around 6400 people, Beckwith Township comprises a handful of villages and hamlets in Eastern Ontario. The residents of Ashton, Blacks Corner, Franktown, Gillies Corners, Prospect and Scotch Corners enjoy an easy commute to Ottawa and other centres.

As well as fertile farmland, forests and wetlands, the township boasts the Mississippi Lake and River, and the Jock River. A larger underground aquifer supplies the private wells of the residents. Despite the wealth of water resources possessed by this idyllic township, residents have faced serious water stress in recent years. The presence of contaminants of concern robbed them of water confidence, until the Township chose a multi-barrier solution that included the unparalleled protection of the TrojanUVMax™ Pro Series.

During a routine study in 2000, officials discovered the presence of Trichloroethylene (or TCE) in the aquifer from which township wells draw water. Further study revealed that the source was an abandoned landfill that was leaching the chemical into the water source.

TCE is a chemical used in metal degreasing operations, and is listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen. Under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Environment Canada and Health Canada have listed TCE as one of the 30 most toxic substances in Canada. When TCE breaks down, it produces Vinyl Chloride, a known carcinogen.
