A body was found in a sewage tank at a college campus last month and police are still investigating what happened.

Police officers were called to the campus of High Melton College, part of England’s Doncaster College, where workers had found the body.

“Dark and cold conditions prevented officers from accessing the body so the scene was guarded overnight. Detectives are working with Yorkshire Water, underwater search teams and crime scene officers to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” The BBC reported.

The man was later identified as James Nicholls, 29, of Long Eaton, The BBC reported.

“Detectives investigating Mr. Nicholls death are not treating it as suspicious and inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances,” South Yorkshire police said in a statement.

“Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to the family at this unimaginably sad time,” deputy principal of the college Catherine Parkinson said, per the news report.

A police spokesperson said an investigation is ongoing to understand the circumstances of Nicholls’ death, according to the report.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water made a statement to the press, per The Star: “The body was found at our High Melton Waste Water Treatment Works which is located in the grounds of Doncaster College. We are sad to learn of the discovery of a body at our sewage plant. We are doing everything we can to support the police with their ongoing investigations.”

Yorkshire Water operates more than 700 water and sewage treatment works and 120 reservoirs, according to the utility. "We look after 62,000 miles of water and sewerage mains — enough pipework to circulate the earth."
