Water Online Radio: What’s new for Severn Trent in terms of technological innovation?

John: Anchor-Rite is our newest innovation in filter underdrains, and it has some significant features over previous technologies in the marketplace. The Anchor-Rite concept is very simple. It adds an anchor to the TETRA LP Block to fasten it to the floor, and this significantly increases the hold-down capacity of the block. In the past, this was done with grout, but grout’s strength degrades over time.

We have done lots of testing with the block. The old-style type blocks may have approximately 600-pound per block uplift strength. Over the years, we had added what was called GroutGrip and GroutGrip double deck capacity. With Anchor-Rite, we are up to 3,000 pounds per block.

That’s a lot of strength right there. Basically, the anchor does more than the grout does, and it makes a significant difference. It gives a long-term reliability and comfort to the customer.

Water Online Radio: What is the Anchor-Rite’s key feature?

John: The best thing is, it is really simple. It’s so simple that you can literally put it on the existing block in a matter of minutes. This makes it very simple for contractors to install by joining a hole, tapping an anchor, and tightening a nut.

Water Online Radio: In terms of cost, is there a long-term impact such as less maintenance, less worries, or fewer breakdowns?

John: Basically, fewer breakdowns. Grout gradually degrades, and even if some of the grout does degrade, the anchor is there. It’s not going anywhere. It is a stainless anchor, and it will be there for a very, very long time.

Water Online Radio: Given that you’re responsible from pole to pole in the Americas now, talk about the US market trends.

John: A lot of people know Severn Trent as the go-to people for Bayoxide (for arsenic removal). As a company, we do more than that.

We have removal technologies for fluoride. People don’t always realize that fluoride is a contaminant and a health concern in some places. A lot of fluoride can mean health damage to citizens.

We do nitrate removal using ion-exchange resins to remove the nitrates. This is a common ground contaminant due to farming in many parts of the country, particularly in California and the mid-west. There are parts of California right now when people cannot use their well water because it’s so high in nitrate contaminates.

We are innovating in this area. Ion-exchange creates a little brine when you remove the nitrates, and this brine must be disposed of. We have a new technology that just finished up a series of pilot tests. It has been proven very successful in these tests, and we are looking forward to introducing it to the marketplace.

This technology basically converts the nitrates removed with the brine when you regenerate the ion-exchange system so you can reuse the brine. This is helpful because in many places where these wells are located, there are no places to dispose of the brine. So, by being able to reuse the brine time after time, we reduce the operating cost associated with the technology...
