Welsh Water Selects ICMLive

Leading Real-Time Forecasting and Management Solution to Help Optimize Day-to-Day Sewer Network Operation for Sixth Largest Water and Sewerage Company in England and Wales

Innovyze, a leading global innovator of business analytics software and technologies for smart wet infrastructure, recently announced that Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, UK, has selected ICMLive, the industry’s leading operational forecasting and management solution for urban and rural drainage systems. The purchase will help Welsh Water harness the power of real-time data, scenario planning and predictive modeling to transform the operation and management of its large, complex collection system and anticipate and mitigate the effects of extreme weather-related events.

Welsh Water is the sixth largest of the ten regulated water and sewerage companies in England and Wales, serving over three million people. Its complex sewer network comprises 832 wastewater treatment plants and 19,000km of sewer mains, incorporating 1,700 sewage pumping stations and 3,300 combined sewer overflows. To assess the benefits of using real-time forecasting software for the operational management of its assets, the utility will use ICMLive in a pilot study on a relatively small yet complex catchment. The study will provide a better understanding of the day-to-day operation of the network, and enable the utility to assess how operational strategy may help reduce not only capital expenditure but combined sewer overflow spills and flooding caused by surcharging sewers.

A powerful risk assessment and real-time decision making tool, ICMLive enables managers and operators to consider the influence of a full range of catchment factors in the management of flooding and reduction of unregulated discharges; the optimization of storage and existing infrastructure, leading to savings on capital works; and the optimization of pumps to lower energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions. The software is designed to work automatically. Once a system is configured, real-time data is continually and automatically harvested and quality-checked. This data can be derived from a number of sources, including observed and forecasted radar rainfall, online water quality measurements, and ancillary structure and pump operation time series. Simulations are run automatically at a user-defined frequency drawing on the full hydrodynamic and technological capabilities of InfoWorks ICM, including one- and two-dimensional modeling techniques, real-time control, dynamic water quality analysis, and GPU-enhanced and remote simulation.

ICMLive also allows operators to explore alternative real time control scenarios, such as the impact of switching on a pump earlier than planned, and quickly see the effect of these changes on the system. Its wide range of capabilities allows ICMLive to be used as a key tool in the decision making process, enabling operators to take action to avoid system issues, release timely alerts, and quickly deploy response teams if necessary.

“Welsh Water is a great example of a company taking steps to proactively manage and operate its collection system more efficiently and effectively to best protect public health and the environment,” said Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., BCEEM, NAE, Hon.D.WRE, Dist.D.NE, F. ASCE, President, COO and Chief Technical Officer of Innovyze. “Welsh Water manages and operates a very large and complex wastewater system, and we are proud that this leading UK utility continues to consider our powerful tools the best alternatives for helping them meet their business challenges. By strengthening its comprehensive smart water network solutions portfolio with ICMLive, Welsh Water has demonstrated its exemplary commitment to excellence, its customers, and the environment. We look forward to being a vital part of its continued success.”
