WE&RF Requests Proposals To Establish Criteria For Nutrient Target-Setting

The Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) is accepting proposals for a new research project, Establishing Methods for Numeric Nutrient Target-Setting, LINK3R16. This research builds on previous WE&RF research (Modeling Guidance for Developing Site-Specific Nutrient Goals LINK1T11). It seeks to improve and advance understanding of nutrient loading and ecosystem effect relationships. The results should apply to management.

WE&RF seeks to fill a knowledge gap in developing water quality criteria for nitrogen and phosphorus to help decision makers address nutrient impairments and protect healthy waters from future impairments. Proposals to establish methods for numeric nutrient target-setting that overcome modeling limitations identified in LINK1T11, and lead to effective criteria development to meet water quality standards and goals for nutrients are preferred. The LINK research seeks to provide end-users with a practical modeling-based approach for water quality criteria that quantifiably connects designated uses, environmental indicators/response variables, and N and P for various types of waters. Recommendations are sought to improve the models’ reliability and best ways to achieve those changes.
