Water Plant Security And Process Optimization
By Bob Bryant and Darryl Green
Before September 11, 2001, "water security" meant being sure you had good water to drink, and that there was enough of it. Not any more! Suddenly, discussions became focused on the possibility of drinking water systems being intentionally contaminated by terrorists.
This then created an entirely new perspective on how to ensure potable water safety. Everyone has an opinion--the EPA, CIA, FBI. CDC, every news media, housewives, and of course, the people responsible for producing drinking water. Water security seminars appeared on the agenda of technical conferences. Congress initiated funding for water security measures. Suddenly, the most fundamental resource for sustaining life (second to air) was a hot topic. Although a lot of people talk about it, immediate responsibility falls back on those operating the plants.
