Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Supplies Process For Treatment Of High pH SAGD Produced Water
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies will provide a new technology to Tervita Corporation to treat evaporator blowdown/concentrate resulting from treatment of produced water from steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operators. This process was developed specifically to provide a more sustainable, cost-effective solution to the challenges of responsible disposal of this wastestream.
The blowdown/concentrate from first generation or older produced water evaporation systems are laden with silica and contain high pH levels that significantly affect disposal options. Due to the chemistry of the blowdown, typical deepwell injection disposal is economically and technically prohibitive and alternatively disposed of in salt caverns.
The process is based on the Silica Sorption Process developed for second-generation produced water evaporators installed by Veolia. Notably, both processes remove the silica from produced water that provides much more flexibility in disposal. The development effort consisted of several pilot tests to validate design parameters.
“Tervita is constantly looking for ways to innovate and improve how we protect and clean our earth,” said John Gibson, Tervita president and CEO. “This process helps ensure we are in a position to offer our oil and gas customers technologies and solutions that help facilitate sustainable and responsible development.”
Veolia’s technology will be an integral part of Tervita’s extensive capabilities in oil and gas field waste management. Together, this innovation will offer an economical and environmentally sustainable offering to heavy oil producers.
