The American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists held their Annual Awards Luncheon and Conference in late April at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Veolia Water Technologies was the proud sponsor of the Wesley Eckenfelder Industrial Waste Management Medal which was awarded for a project to clean up the contamination in the groundwater, soil and indoor air at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego.

The Eckenfelder award recognized Navy Region Southwest for the innovative cleanup to ensure worker safety and protect the groundwater which is a project that fits very well with Veolia’s overall mission of Resourcing the world through developing access to resources, replenishing resources and preserving resources.

Naval Base Point Loma is a former aircraft manufacturing facility where stored solvents have likely contributed to the contamination in the soil, groundwater and indoor air.

“Since the remediation systems began operations in April 2015, levels of TCE in indoor air have reduced to below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s action levels. Offices that were vacated due to health concerns are reoccupied. Furthermore, groundwater VOC concentrations have been substantially reduced more than 100 fold. The improvement in groundwater quality will support future beneficial uses as the demand for water continues to increase” said H.C. Warner III, Commanding Officer at Naval Base Point Loma, who accepted the award at AAEES’s Annual Awards Luncheon.

“The actions taken by Naval Base Point Loma will inspire individuals and organizations to identify creative ways to better manage the precious resources of the world. Congratulations to Navy Region Southwest and all involved in the project,” states Klaus Andersen, President of Veolia Water Technologies, Inc.
