Ultrafiltration is the only regenerable filtration process. While a microporous membrane filter removes particles according to pore size, an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane functions as a molecular sieve that separates dissolved molecules on the basis of size. The UF accomplishes this by passing a solution through an extremely-fine filter.

The UF is a durable, thin, selectively-permeable membrane that retains most macromolecules above a certain size, including colloids, microorganisms and pyrogen. Smaller molecules, such as solvent and ionized contaminants, pass into the filtrate.

Ultrafilters are available in several ranges, and the membrane will hold back most molecules above a designated size.
