UK's Largest Water Utility Selects InfoWorks ICM

Leading Integrated Catchment Modeling Solution to Aid Thames Water in Managing its Complex and Demanding Sewer Networks

Innovyze, a leading global innovator of business analytics software and technologies for smart wet infrastructure, recently announced that Thames Water, UK, has purchased multiple licenses of InfoWorks ICM Suite, the industry’s leading integrated catchment modeling solution. In taking advantage of InfoWorks ICM’s powerful 1D and 2D modeling capabilities, predictive analytics and powerful simulation extensions, Thames Water will be better positioned to effectively manage its large and complex sewer networks, develop reliable flood risk control plans, increase operational efficiency, maintain regulatory compliance, and improve customer satisfaction.

Thames Water is the United Kingdom’s largest wastewater services provider, with 67,000 miles of sewer, 2,530 pumping stations, 1.2 million manholes and 350 sewage works providing services to 15 million customers in London and the Thames Valley. It had already adopted both Innovyze award-winning InfoWater and InfoNetwater modeling and asset management software.

“We selected InfoWorks ICM for its comprehensive drainage systems modeling prowess,” said Andrew Hagger, Wastewater Infrastructure Asset & Modelling Strategy Manager for Thames Water. “The software will help us develop and validate sound and reliable solutions aimed at best optimizing the operation and performance of our critical sewer infrastructures and protecting property and the urban environment.”

A hallmark of InfoWorks ICM is its dynamic integration of one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation of flows in rivers, open channels, and pipe networks with two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation of surface flooding in the urban environment and river floodplain. The industry-leading software provides a powerful solution for simultaneously modeling belowground and aboveground elements of catchments to accurately represent all flow paths and improve understanding of processes occurring in the holistic environment. The software also takes into account interactions of natural and man-made environments and effectively simulates the water quality impact of polluting runoff and effluent from urban areas. Such advanced capabilities greatly enhance wastewater utilities’ ability to predict overflows; support cost-effective drainage design and management; develop online urban flooding forecasts; conceive and evaluate sound and reliable urban catchment strategies such as storm sewer separation, active real-time control and provision of adequate additional storage; and improve the operation of any drainage system.

“Thames Water is a symbol of quality and excellence in the water and wastewater network modeling arena,” said Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., BCEEM, Hon.D.WRE, Dist.D.NE, Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, President, COO and Chief Innovation Officer of Innovyze. “The utility operates and manages very complex and demanding water and wastewater infrastructures, and has retained its industry-leading position by continually innovating. We’re proud that Thames Water continues to choose Innovyze as its solution partner for managing its water and wastewater assets. We look forward to helping this leadership enterprise achieve many more decades of world-class performance, along with breakthrough cost savings.”
