Three Innovative Dow Technologies Short-Listed For 2016 IChemE Global Awards

Water scarcity, energy efficiency in building design, curbing tax fraud due to fuel laundering: Dow technologies offer solutions to help solve world challenges

Two innovative products and one project of The Dow Chemical Company are finalists in the 2016 Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Awards. Dow is in the running for three awards: the Innovative Product Award, the Energy Award and the Water Award. The IChemE Awards celebrate excellence, innovation, and achievement in the chemical process and biochemical industries.

“We innovate to create products that provide solutions to world challenges, while addressing key customer needs,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior vice president, R&D, and chief technology officer. “Receiving recognition from the IChemE shows that we are highly innovative in the science and engineering we employ, truly pushing the envelope. IChemE Awards are global, like Dow. We have deep customer engagement around the world through our network of global R&D centers. Our three finalists are testament of our commitment to provide innovative solutions to our customers around the globe.”

IChemE received nearly 500 submissions, a record number since the award’s inception in 1994. Nominees are evaluated on originality, innovation, evidence of potential or achieved technical and/or business success, environmental benefits, impact on stakeholders, and potential for wider application.
Dow technologies are finalists for the following awards:

Innovative Product Award – This award recognizes the best product originating from the process industries to be manufactured commercially after July 2013. The product should demonstrate innovation, and a social, commercial, safety and/or environmental benefit.

  • ACCUTRACE S10 Molecular Fuel Marker empowers governments to curb tax fraud by authenticating petroleum products for their intended use (such as agriculture and home heating) and prevent them being sold into higher taxed uses (such as vehicles for road transport) with a chemistry highly resistant to removal through known fuel laundering techniques. In addition to protecting tax revenue, an effective fuel marking solution supports the reduction of hazardous waste dumping and other environmental health detriments associated with fuel laundering. Made of the same elements as fuel itself, ACCUTRACE markers do not add any ozone-depleting additives or corrosive properties.

Energy Award – The best project or process to demonstrate innovation in renewable, alternative or nuclear energy, efficient energy use or the development of energy production methods that reduce energy intensity is recognized by this award.

  • High strength insulating glass sealant – Dow Corning 3363 is a new insulating glass sealant technology developed with approximately 50 percent higher strength than conventional material. This technology allows architects to continue designing innovative glass façades while ensuring the thermal, acoustic and durable performances of the buildings at optimized manufacturer’s productivity.

Water Award – The best project or process demonstrating innovation in water use, cleanup and reuse, with a particular emphasis on reducing environmental impact while preserving commercial viability, is recognized by this award.

  • Tarragona DEMOWARE industrial water reuse project – Advanced reverse osmosis membranes from Dow Water & Process Solutions enable industrial water reuse in the water-scarce region of Camp de Tarragona, Spain. The Camp de Tarragona Advanced Water Reclamation Plant uses a combination of DOW FILMTEC BW30XFR-400/34i extra fouling resistant membranes and DOW FILMTECLE-440i[1] low-energy membranes to reduce the strain on limited, local freshwater resources caused by supplying the water needs of companies within the Camp de Tarragona petrochemical complex. As part of the complex, Dow also uses the recycled water, reducing our water footprint in the region. Dow Tarragona’s cooling towers have increased the number of cycles they can operate with the same amount of water without scaling, corrosion or bio-growth tendency. Cooling tower blowdown has also been reduced by 49 percent.

The IChemE Global Award winners will be announced on November 3, 2016, during a ceremony at The Palace Hotel in Manchester, UK.
