Sanitaire has provided the wastewater treatment industry with innovative and cost-effective treatment technologies for over 40 years. This tradition continues with the Sanitaire DrumFilter, a tertiary filtration system. With more stringent effluent requirements being mandated from regulatory agencies, owners of wastewater treatment plants are looking for cost-effective, highly-efficient solutions. One way to accomplish this is through the use of a DrumFilter. By adding this tertiary treatment unit to the existing process scheme, wastewater treatment plants can eliminate the need to expand major treatment units. Due to low headloss requirements, the DrumFilter can be easily integrated into any new or existing treatment plant scheme. In a typical DrumFilter application, there is no need for chemical addition or intensive mechanical energy to achieve treatment goals.
The internally fed, continuous flow DrumFilter is a cost-effective method of removing fine particulate matter. The DrumFilter provides a flexible solution for integration into any process scheme, new or existing. Installed without a housing enclosure (RF Series) or with an enclosure (RFM or RFS Series), the DrumFilter will provide years of reliable service. The robust design includes a specially engineered drive assembly with an integrated elastomeric end plate. This design distributes forces, thus eliminating the source of shaft problems that have been identified with earlier microscreening devices. The screen material is constructed of an acid-resistant polyester fabric and is encapsulated in modular polypropylene injection-molded panels. The screen panels are mounted along the perimeter of a stainless steel drum support frame.

The DrumFilter operates under the simple principal of a mechanical sieve. The process stream enters the inside of the drum via an inlet pipe where it comes in contact with the screen material. The process stream flows from the inside of the drum to the outside of the drum by gravity and the solids adhere to the screen. There is a relatively small hydraulic head created inside the drum as the DrumFilter blinds. As the water level inside the drum increases to a predetermined point, the backwash cycle activates automatically. The drum will then rotate as a spray wash system is operated on the outside of the drum. The backwash water source is typically filtered effluent. The high-pressure spray removes the solids, which are collected in a trough located inside the drum. The trough conveys the solids out of the drum for further treatment or for recycling to the head of the wastewater treatment plant. During the backwash cycle, the DrumFilter is not taken out of service, therefore water is continuously processed with no interuptions.
