Peracetic Acid - An Effective Disinfection Method Helps Prevent The Spread Of Waterborne Disease

An important new Fact Sheet from the EPA

In October 2012, the EPA, working with John Maziuk of Solvay Chemicals, Inc., published its updated Fact Sheet on peracetic acid, identifying PAA as an effective wastewater disinfection treatment. Offering a complete overview of PAA, its applications, byproducts and shipping data, as well as documented case studies and results, the EPA Fact Sheet defines the mechanisms of disinfection using PAA.

Proxitane WW-12 Peracetic Acid (PAA) microbiocide from Solvay Chemicals, Inc. is used for biological control in municipal wastewaters. An alternative to halogenated disinfectants such as chlorine-based chemicals, this EPA-registered wastewater disinfectant can have an immediate positive synergistic effect on an existing UV disinfection system by simply adding it into the wastewater.

PAA is a more rapidly acting disinfectant than chlorine based disinfectants, does not generate harmful DBPs, and can be economically retrofitted and/or work in series with an existing disinfection system. PAA dissipates rapidly and does not generate harmful disinfectant byproducts even if overdosed.

Results of a recent case study show initial fecal coliform counts reduced 10 fold within the first 8-10 minutes estimated residence time after contact with the product. Additionally, all PAA was consumed prior to discharge, demonstrating lack of persistence of PAA.
