Neptune Benson is proud to announce the design and implementation of a custom ultraviolet (UV) system for the God’s Lake First Nation Reserve in Manitoba, Canada.

Coventry, RI (PRWEB) - The installation, designed for disinfecting wastewater, presented unique challenges due to requirements that the equipment work safely within an environment where explosive gases may occur during normal operating conditions. God’s Lake First Nation reserve is also very isolated and remote; requiring the technology chosen to be carefully selected for reliability and a robust design.

Corex Water Systems, the contractor building the facility, asked Neptune Benson to supply an ETS-UV system that would meet the necessary requirements and also be independently certified to perform safely.

To address this, Neptune Benson’s ETS-UV design team developed Intrinsically Safe (IS) components to prevent any explosion hazard, and the complete UV system was then certified by a third party as suitable for use in a hazardous environment. The ETS-UV chambers are designed, manufactured and certified to feature the necessary Ex nA (Non Sparking), Ex e (Enhanced Safety) and Ex d (Flame proof) designs, allowing for a flexible approach to almost any hazardous area specification . All Ex d panels feature a closed coupled Ex e junction box for both electrical and signal terminations, whilst the UV systems instrumentation utilizes an Ex ia (intrinsically safe) Zone 1 solution that is often the minimum standard required by operators working in the hazardous gas environments such as offshore installations , distilleries or wastewater facilities.

“This was an exciting project for us.” said Ken Rodi, CEO of Neptune Benson. “It allows us to showcase our innovation and opens the door to other projects that require certified designs.”

The traditional approach for UV installations had been to use a purge system, which blows gas or air under positive pressure into a large enclosure housing the UV system. This approach has proven unreliable and difficult to maintain. The components used to generate or maintain the purge gas can fail and usually require frequent and costly maintenance. These purged, or Ex p designs use positive gas pressure to create a safe area within the panel or UV chamber, however flameproof or Ex d solutions are favored by operators as this approach is proven to be safer, more robust, have a smaller footprint, lighter and requires significantly less installation and maintenance activity. In addition, due to the complex nature of Ex p designs and the requirement for a safe gas supply, Ex d solutions are often far more cost effective.

Commenting on the contract, Jon McClean, President of ETS-UV by Neptune Benson stated “We are receiving a lot of inquiries for these safe, certified designs. The advances in safety, and the operational advantages of our approach over the traditional purge system will allow ETS-UV to be used in situations where it could not be applied previously”
