Mayor John Marchand To Share Lessons From 'Both Sides Of The Gavel' During Public Officials Breakfast At AWWA Annual Conference & Exposition

Mayor John Marchand of Livermore, Calif., a longtime water quality and systems expert before being elected mayor in 2011, will speak about water from “both sides of the gavel” during the American Water Works Association’s Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus June 9 at the Hilton Anaheim.

The event is part of AWWA’s Annual Conference & Exposition, which will bring an estimated 12,000 water experts to Anaheim from June 7-10.

Mayor Marchand will deliver insights gained from working in numerous roles within the water profession; as a water quality chemist, as an elected water board member and currently as a Mayor overseeing a water enterprise. Mayor Marchand will explore the differences between developing and implementing policies and missteps that can be avoided through awareness and training.

With drought impacting California and wasted water a topic of increased media interest, attendees will also hear from Chris Leauber, chair of the AWWA Water Loss Control Committee. Leauber, the executive director of the Water & Wastewater Authority of Wilson County, Tenn., will discuss the increasing importance of understanding each utility’s non-revenue water picture and consistent communications with utility staff, media and customers.

AWWA Deputy Executive Director Tom Curtis, who leads the association’s Washington, D.C.-based Government Affairs Office, is also on the agenda and will discuss the water and public policy landscape in the U.S. capital.

The event, which takes place in the Hilton Anaheim Avalon A and B rooms, is sponsored by EJ, EMA and Wachs Water Services.

The Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus – free to public officials registered for the conference – is part of a broader public officials program at ACE15 that includes 12 hours of certificate training. ACE15 public officials events include:

Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus (Tues., June 9, 8-11:30 a.m., Hilton Anaheim, Rooms Avalon A and B)
Public officials hear from local and national speakers and discuss common issues during this popular annual event. The breakfast is complimentary for public officials who register.

Public Officials Certificate Program (June 7-9, 1-5 p.m. each day, Anaheim Convention Center, Room 304B)
By participating in three four-hour courses, public officials registered at ACE15 have an opportunity to earn the AWWA Public Officials Certificate. The course on June 7 is “Introduction to Water and Sewer Operating Environments.” The course on June 8 is “Water and Sewer Infrastructure, Operations and Maintenance.” The course on June 9 is “Planning and Funding Your Capital Infrastructure.” Renowned water educator and author Frederick Bloetscher, PhD, P.E., will teach the courses. Public officials may register for all three courses to earn the certificate or take individual courses.
