The Jacobi Carbons Group announced recently that its Nattandiya, Sri Lanka production facility has received certification from the Water Quality Association (WQA) under WQA/ASPE/ANSI Standard S-802: Product Sustainability for Activated Carbon.

In response to increasing demand within the water treatment industry for an independent standard for environmental and sustainability claims, WQA developed a voluntary sustainability certification program for water filtration products. Certification of activated carbon products to the WQA sustainability standard is achieved with three steps:

1. As a prerequisite, the activated carbon products must first be certified to the appropriate safety/performance standard (ANSI/NSF Standard 61 or ANSI/NSF Standard 42).

2. The manufacturer is certified to WQA S-801, a Sustainable Management standard that examines corporate governance factors such as social responsibility, environmental policies, goals and communications.

3. The carbon products are then certified to WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-802, designed for the certification of virgin activated carbon. This standard covers the cradle-to-grave attributes of a product, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing and assembly, packaging, and end-of-life management.

Following this process, over 25 activated carbon products produced at Jacobi’s Sri Lanka facility will now carry a WQA Certification Symbol on their packaging.

“We are proud to achieve this certification, which reinforces our organization’s commitment to sustainability,” stated Anders Skeini, Chief Executive Officer of Jacobi Carbons. “As the world’s largest manufacturer of coconut shell based activated carbons, we know that our customers value the fact that activated carbons manufactured from coconut shell, a renewable resource, enhance the sustainability claims they in turn can make on their products.”
