San Jose Water Company (SJWC) wants to upgrade its 40-year old Montevina Water Treatment Plant to provide safe, reliable water to Los Gatos residents and the surrounding areas. HDR Inc. conducted an intensive evaluation using an interactive multiple criteria tool to obtain assurance of proven performance and economy from newer membrane technologies. Based on the interactive decision tool results, SJWC and HDR selected H2O Innovation and inge UF membranes for the plant upgrade.

A Proof of Performance test ensued for 90 days. Throughout the piloting with water coming from the Santa Cruz Mountains watershed, the inge UF membranes performed as projected during the bidding phase. SJWC staff were convinced of the excellent performance and easy, simple operation of the membranes. The low energy demands, high water recovery, extended cleaning intervals combined with extended membrane warranty guarantee the lowest OPEX and CAPEX. “SJWC looks forward to operating its water treatment plant once it is upgraded with robust, hydrophilic, ultrafiltration Multibore membranes. The new membranes will enable SJWC to produce increased volumes of high quality drinking water by being able to treat high turbidity water during storms”, says Francois Rodigari, Director of Water Quality and Environmental Services at SJWC.

“BASF/inge is glad that we can implement our highly robust modules with patented Multibore UF membrane for the Montevina plant upgrade. It is a perfect large scale reference for North America and particularly for California where water is such a precious commodity”, states Josef Wunram, inge Sales Director.

“We were able to prove the quality and commercial advantages of our UF membranes. SJWC and HDR ranked us highest on non-cost related benefits, lowest 20 year present worth value and highest benefit-to-normalized cost ratio”, adds Scott Caothien, Technical Manager of the inge Membrane Solutions in the US.

The Sales team is sure that this successful project will be well noted in the industry and that it may underline inge expertise for future projects.
