Giuliani Partners Completes Independent Assessment Of U.S. Water & Wastewater Infrastructure
Continues Consumer Awareness Campaign with Launch of Website Warning of Hidden Dangers for American Homeowners
Giuliani Partners LLC recently released a study, “The Hidden Danger of Failing Water Infrastructure: Putting American Families at Risk,” examining the decline of America’s water and wastewater systems and the direct financial threat the decay of this critical infrastructure poses for American families.
Giuliani Partners’ analysis highlights that America’s aging water infrastructure is in a state of crisis, the culmination of years of neglect and underinvestment. Much of our water infrastructure is operating on borrowed time, with close to 25 percent of pipes installed over fifty years ago and some installations pre-dating the Civil War. Today, 45 percent of our water pipes are in poor shape, up from just 10 percent in the early 1980s. Without time, capital, and strong will at a national and local level, the mains and pipes that comprise our water and wastewater systems are destined to fail, costing what could amount to more than a trillion dollars in repairs over the next twenty five years.
The analysis also exposes the hidden danger American homeowners and their families face as a consequence of our failing water infrastructure. It is estimated that 1.1 million homeowners will suffer a water service line emergency in 2013, at a rate of one break or leak every 30 seconds and a total cost that could exceed $2 billion nationwide. The majority of Americans (61 percent) are unaware that a leak on their own property is likely their responsibility to fix, often at significant cost. Worse, many American families do not have the means to pay these bills when they unexpectedly arise.
“The financial burden for the individual homeowner is the real untold story in the conversation about our deteriorating infrastructure,” said Rudy Giuliani, Chairman and CEO of Giuliani Partners. “It’s important that Americans understand that they can have an active role in mitigating the issues of infrastructure and are aware of the ways they can protect their property.”
Through a consumer awareness campaign, Giuliani Partners aims to assist in educating homeowners on their water and sewer line responsibilities and ways they can mitigate their risk, as well as raise awareness of the need for water and sewer infrastructure improvement on a national scale. As part of this campaign, HomeServe has launched a website, hiddendangers.org that outlines the key facts of the U.S. water infrastructure challenge and serves as an educational resource for homeowners and others.
