ECNEC Clears Tk 35.09b DWASA Water Treatment Plant Project
The government approved on Tuesday the VAT and Supplementary Duty automation project at a cost of Tk 5.52 billion aimed at facilitating online submission of the tax returns by the corporate players.
Presided over by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved 12 projects involving Tk 95.81 billion along with the VAT and Supplementary Duty (SD) implementation project.
National Board of Revenue officials said after implementation of the VAT and SD automation project, the private and public companies will pay the taxes through online. Besides, the businesses will be interconnected with the NBR to ensure transparency in the tax payment.
The ECNEC also approved setting up of a water treatment plant project at Jashaldia in Munshiganj for bringing water from Padma river to the capital city Dhaka.
The plant would treat 450 million litres water per day (MLD). It would be established under a project called "Padma (Jashaldia) Water Treatment Plant (phase-1)" at a cost of Tk 35.09 billion.
On completion of the project, Dhaka WASA will supply additional 450 million litres water per day. WASA is currently supplying 2,000 MLD water against the demand for 2,200 MLD in the capital.
Exim Bank of China would provide Tk 24.13 billion for the project while WASA itself will provide Tk 220 million. The project is expected to be completed by June, 2016.
Emerging from the meeting, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam said out of Tk 95.81 billion cost for the 12 ECNEC approved projects, Tk 43.80 billion will come from the government exchequer and the remaining Tk 52.01 billion will come as project assistance.
The other projects approved in the meeting are: Jatka conservation, alternate income generation for the fishers and research at Tk 460 million, Production, stores and distribution of quality seeds of pulse, oil and onion at farmers level at Tk450 million, Maintenance, rehabilitation of BADC's existing fertiliser godowns and strengthening of fertiliser management activities at Tk1.34 billion, Mirzapur-Warsee-Balia road construction at Tk 910 million, Ship personnel training institute establishment at Tk400 million, Pabna BSCIC industrial city expansion at Tk450 million, the 400/230/132 KV grid network development at Tk32.27 billion, Greater Noakhali rural infrastructure development project-2 at Tk4.50 billion, Joydevpur- Mymensingh road development at Tk 18.15 billion and Construction of National Complex for the disabled, Mirpur, Dhaka project.
ECNEC members including Planning Minister AK Khandker, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, other ministers, advisers to the Prime Minister, members of the Planning Commission, secretaries and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
