Catskill-Delaware Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility Awarded 2013 Best New York Region Project
Facility Recognized By Engineering News-Record In Water/Environment Category
Catskill-Delaware ultraviolet disinfection (UV) facility has been recognized with a 2013 Best New York Region Project Award in the water/environment category by Engineering News-Record (ENR) and is one of four candidate projects for The Best New York Region Project Award. The awards are a series of events honoring the building teams for the year’s best projects, and honorees are selected by juries of prominent professionals in the industry. The award will be presented on November 6 at The McGraw-Hill building in New York City.
CDM Smith, in joint venture with Hazen and Sawyer, partnered with New York City Department of Environmental Protection to provide planning, design and construction phase services for the Catskill-Delaware UV facility. The project was constructed by a joint venture of Skanska, J.F. White and ECCO, with construction management provided by a joint venture of Arcadis U.S. and CH2M Hill.
The Catskill-Delaware UV facility is the largest capacity water treatment plant in the world, and treats and controls the flow of more than 2 billion gallons of drinking water per day for more than 9 million New York City and upstate residents. Designed to meet new and future regulatory requirements, the UV facility provides an additional layer of protection for drinking water from Cryptosporidium, an organism that can cause gastrointestinal illness.
The Catskill-Delaware water supply system conveys water from reservoirs in upstate New York through hundreds of miles of tunnels to provide 90 percent of New York City’s drinking water. Part of this world class engineering achievement, the Catskill-Delaware UV facility was built with flexibility in mind—giving future engineers the ability to enhance and modify the system to meet the needs and challenges of growth and prosperity.
The facility has also been recognized by the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). The group will honor the New York City Department of Environmental Protection with presentation of The UV Engineering Project of the Year Award at IUVA's World Congress in Las Vegas on September 25, 2013.
