Blue Earth Labs Guides Municipal Water Systems In Achieving Stage 2 Compliance
Provides Online Step-By-Step Resource and Stage 2 Compliance Guarantee Solution
Blue Earth Labs (www.blueearthlabs.com), a chemical research and development company, today announced that it has launched an online Step-by-Step Guide to Stage 2 Compliance to assist small water systems in complying with the EPA Stage 2 Disinfectant and Disinfection Byproducts Rule (Stage 2 DBPR). To comply with this rule, water utilities must determine the amount of disinfection byrpoducts (DBPs) in the water system and meet EPA requirements for DBP levels by October 2013. Blue Earth Labs created this comprehensive resource to provide the necessary steps to achieve Stage 2 DBPR compliance including key monitoring deadlines and links to critical information from the EPA and from each state.
Stage 2 DBPR requires all water utilities to conduct an evaluation of their water system, known as an Initial Distribution System Evaluation (IDSE) to identify locations with high disinfection byproduct concentrations, which will be sampled and monitored. This rule also requires each water system to determine if they have exceeded an operational evaluation level, which is identified using their compliance monitoring results. If there is an exceedance, the water system must reduce the DBP level by the 2013 deadline.
“A large majority of water systems have yet to implement the EPA’s stringent requirements, and they are beginning to run out of time,” said Bob Cashion, Director of Training and Field Services at Blue Earth Labs. “It is one of our primary goals to ensure that utilities stay on track by equipping them with information and solutions to comply with Stage 2 regulations within the set timeframe.”
Blue Earth Labs has engineered a chemical platform, which guarantees Stage 2 compliance by cleaning the entire water system, reducing DBP levels through the elimination of biological and mineral buildup. By removing organic and inorganic deposits from tanks, basins and distribution pipes, the infrastructure-generated contribution to DBP formation and increased disinfectant-demand are eliminated. Free chlorine and chloramine residuals can then be stabilized in the distribution system.
“We take a practical and cost-effective approach to ensuring compliance for our customers. Our solution improves system performance and prevents costly replacement of aging water infrastructure. This provides a bigger margin of error for operators and allows utilities to focus more on source water quality without worrying about the contribution of the distribution system, “ said Dane Madsen, CEO of Blue Earth Labs.
