BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC Wastewater Project Wins National Recycling Award From American Chemistry Council

BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC received a Waste Minimization, Reuse and Recycling Award from the American Chemistry Council (ACC) for successfully implementing a wastewater management project in Port Arthur, Texas that reduces site waste along with operating costs. Representatives from the company were recognized during the 2014 Responsible CareConference and Expo in Miami, FL.

“Being nationally recognized as an industry top performer highlights our continuing focus on innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit our customers and the environment,” said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager of BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC in Port Arthur. “Through site-wide teamwork and collaboration, our employees created an industry best practice that helps minimize waste, conserve resources and increase cost efficiency.”

Historically, all waste water that was generated from operational processes, such as water testing on equipment, was sent to an off-site disposal facility. Last year Port Arthur employees developed a process to reuse waste water that met site requirements instead of transporting it for disposal. Now, all water meeting the site’s requirements is reused on site, resulting in substantial annual savings. More importantly, the Port Arthur site is demonstrating strong environmental leadership by recycling, reducing and reusing a natural resource – water.

The Responsible Care awards program recognizes ACC members and partner companies that help ACC meet industry-wide safety and product stewardship targets in waste minimization, reuse and recycling. It also provides opportunities for participants to share and promote best practices.

"These companies and individuals truly embody the Responsible Care ethic and give the Responsible Care program its credibility and strength,” said ACC President and CEO Cal Dooley. “They demonstrate the chemical industry’s commitment to sound performance and the health and safety of its workers, its customers, and the communities in which we operate.”
