Alfa Laval Launches Screw Press At WEFTEC 2014

Alfa Laval

At the WEFTEC exhibition in New Orleans, USA, September 29 - October 1, Alfa Laval is launching a compact, cost-efficient screw press, featuring low power consumption, and minimal maintenance and supervision requirements

The compact Alfa Laval Screw Press is a recent addition to the company’s wide range of sludge dewatering solutions. It is specifically designed for dewatering of industrial and municipal water and wastewater sludge as a cost-effective way to reduce sludge volume, lowering transportation and disposal costs.

The high-performance, continuous screw press is a user-friendly, reliable and robust piece of machinery with high operational uptime. It is characterized by extremely low power consumption, thanks to the direct drive gear motor and a slow rotational speed. The low speed has a direct, positive impact on operational costs and ensures an extremely low noise level.

The screw press features a totally enclosed drum with inspection hatches for maximum operability and maintainability. The drum is equipped with wedge wire screens instead of perforated screens to keep maintenance to a minimum. The positioning of the drive motor on the discharge end of the screw press reduces risk of damage and simplifies service. Screen washing is done intermittently during operation to reduce water demand. And thanks to the low rotational speed and robust design, the screw press has low spare parts consumption. Included equipment is a proprietary sludge/polymer mixer, which reduces polymer consumption while deleting the need for a floc tank with integral mixer.

User-friendly controls ensure that supervision needed is minimal, and easy adjustment of variables suits every customer need. Examples of process optimization include, adjustment of conveyor speed for the most efficient balance between cake solids and capacity, and counter-pressure to obtain the best solids dryness and liquid clarity.

Two types of standard control systems are offered: advanced or basic control. These systems can be expanded to include feed and polymer pumps as well as the solids conveyor.

Alfa Laval’s new screw press was released in Europe earlier this year at the IFAT exhibition, where it generated significant interest, and several machines are now installed in various applications.

WEFTEC visitors to Alfa Laval’s booth will have the opportunity to see the new Alfa Laval Screw Press together with a sequential batch reactor (SBR), an Iso-Disc cloth media filter, a working membrane bioreactor (MBR) unit, key decanter feature components and a fluid control display.
