ZDD can be used to minimize or eliminate disposal through more costly options such as deep well injection, large evaporation ponds, or waste hauling.
ZDD technology utilizes a combination of separation processes that includes an electrodialysis device in an ion substitution mode to remove divalent salts from water. A secondary membrane system can be added to control the silica in the concentrate stream when high silica levels are present.
ZDD can be added to existing RO plants producing potable water from brackish wells to increase the potable water recovery rate from the typical 80% to as high as 97%.
A ZDD retrofit expands treatment capacity and diminishes brine generation. As a result, permitting problems may be resolved. In addition, peripheral processes can be used to recover calcium sulfate and sodium chloride.
