XP-SWMM Studies Accepted By Los Angeles County

December 21, 2005

XP Software announced that after 2 years of development working in close consultation with Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW), XP-SWMM and XP-Storm now incorporates the Los Angeles County Modified Rational Method. XP-SWMM and XP-Storm implements the modified hydrology method developed by the LACDPW to compute surface water runoff within the County of Los Angeles. It may be used to develop hydrographs for any undeveloped, partially developed, or completely developed watershed and includes hydrologic routing of existing or proposed channels and drains.

LACDPW has stated that "….. after review by Public Works officials, input parameters and model results of XP-SWMM were found to be consistent with current Public Works hydrology standards and procedures. Hydrologic studies performed using XP-SWMM and XP-Storm will be accepted for review by the LACDPW".

XP-SWMM and XP-Storm users can dynamically model complex hydraulic networks using runoff generated with MODRAT within XP Software models. This new development will provide convenient new options and automation for Los Angeles County engineering and water resource professionals.

Some of the enhancements added at the request of LACDPW and NOT previously available in the mainframe F0601program include:

  • Built-in rainfall and soil infiltration data
  • Catchment Burn factors
  • Automatic Tc Calculation
  • Routing at 1 minute time step
  • Virtually unlimited lateral branches
  • Unlimited sub-catchments
  • Removal of node & link naming conventions
  • Water quality generation at sub-catchments (and water quality routing in the hydraulics layer of XPSWMM and XP-Storm

When combined with the award winning graphical interface of XP-SWMM with features such as;

  • drag and drop network creation and reconnection,
  • graphical and tabular presentation of results,
  • simultaneous scenario solving and overlaying of results,
  • GIS data acquisition and the ability to use real-world or schematic networks,

XP Software is confident stating that this is the easist and most comprehensive version of the LA County Modified Rational Method you will ever use.

XP Software clients will be able to produce more detailed hydrographs at 1 minute intervals on a 4 day simulation as requested by the LACDPW. The hydrographs can then be optionally routed through the dynamic hydraulics layer of XP-SWMM or XP-Storm; allowing hydraulically complex components such as pumps, tidal inflows, wet or dry ponds, water quality constituents, reverse flow and looped systems to be modeled within a FEMA-approved program.

The rigorous detailed hydraulics of XP-SWMM and XP-Storm will provide increased accuracy with model results that can be clearly displayed for reports or public presentation in table, chart or graphical format. When used in conjunction with XP-12d, 3d AVI movies can be created to demonstrate an animated "fly-through" effect.
