OdoWatch® - Odor Monitoring For Improved Control
Brochure: OdoWatch®
An OdoWatch® system is comprised of electronic noses (e-noses), a weather tower, a preconfigured computer, OdoWatch® software with AERMOD, and a communication system that transmits data to the computer.

How It Works
E-noses are positioned near odor sources at the site to measure odors continuously. The sensors within the e-noses are calibrated to recognize and quantify in odor units the odors of each site. The standards used for the measurements are ASTM E-679-91 and European Standard EN13725.

Veolia Water is the exclusive licensee of OdoWatch® technology in the water and wastewater industry.
The odor data from the e-noses are transmitted to a central control unit (CCU) – a computer preconfigured to analyze the information. A weather tower at the site also sends data to the CCU.
The CCU combines the weather data with the odor data and uses proprietary software along with AERMOD (an air dispersion modeling program) to display the intensity of the odor as a color coded plume overlaid on a map of the site displayed on the computer screen. Thus operators can see the odor intensity. In addition, an alert button at the top of the screen will activate when the odor intensity begins to approach the level at which a human nose can detect it.
In this way, operators are warned when the weather conditions and odor emissions combine to create a situation in which odor complaints could arise. The early warning enables the operators to make process adjustments, use odor treatment chemicals, or take other proactive steps to prevent nuisance odors.
OdoWatch® provides:
- Automated central monitoring of odors
- Odor concentration (intensity) displayed in color
- Real-time weather data displayed
- Odor atmospheric dispersion modeling
- 24/7 real-time odor plume display
- Odor alerts for pre-programmed grid points chosen by the user (Alert Points)
- An archived data log of odor dispersion history

Be the first to know – at last! Early warning enables operators to act to avoid complaints.
Benefits
- Improves community relations by alerting operators before complaints can arise
- Eliminates costly on-site sampling and measurement programs
- Enables selection of right-size odor control equipment
- Provides scientific, defendable odor data
- Prevents overdosing of odor control chemicals
- Facilitates Certificate of Approval for new plants
