By AEROMIX Systems, Inc.

Lago de Atitlán or Lake Atitlán is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Central America. It is famous for its natural beauty and the colorful Mayan towns and villages that surround it. Rich in animal life, Lake Atitlán supports a variety of crops native to Central America. In the summer of 2009, Lake Atitlán began to lose some of that natural beauty it was known for. Recent hurricanes, uncontrolled civil works, and increased use of agrichemical fertilizers harmed the lake; causing elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels.

With no waste regulations being enforced, local villagers and businesses had grown accustomed to dumping waste into the lake. It was even documented that local hotels were draining their sewage water directly into the lake. This excessive waste raised the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) levels in certain areas of the water. The blue-green algae bloom caused the lake to emit a foul-odor and lose its visual appeal. More importantly, it posed a serious threat on the health of locals and tourists.
