Case Study: Improving Urban Stormwater Management With 2D Water Modelling Applications

Engineers and city planners can never be too careful when it comes to urban flood protection and loss prevention. Human life and property damage are often at risk. Recent storm and flooding disasters throughout the world have highlighted the need for government bodies to prepare for the effects of climate change and extreme weather events in urban environments. Engineers are currently faced with the growing issue of managing and predicting flood run off with complicated drainage and pipe systems impacted by continual population growth and aging infrastructure.

The 2005 NSW Floodplain Development Manual, NSW Government, 2005, challenges engineers to hydraulically model overland flow paths. The use of 2D, two-dimensional, models has recently become the latest trend in the U.S. and Australia. As a stormwater management tool, 2D models are more hydraulically accurate to real-life overland flows and produce graphic results, which enable decision makers to plan better.
