HiPOx Case Study: South Lake Tahoe, CA
By APTwater, Inc.
The City of South Lake Tahoe, California has installed two HiPOx® Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) systems for drinking water treatment. The HiPOx systems are used to destroy low concentrations of MTBE and TBA from its groundwater supply wells. Based on the success of the first 800 gpm HiPOx system, the City installed a second 1,500 gpm system to treat 13 impacted wells, or approximately one-half of its water supply. Because the HiPOx systems require little maintenance and produce no waste, the systems are remotely operated and located discretely in residential neighborhoods. An emerging issue at the time, these projects were the first two systems approved by the California Department of Public Health (CA DPH) for the treatment of MTBE. To date, the systems have treated approximately 8.1 billion gallons of safe drinking water for the City of South Lake Tahoe.
