Leveraging Data To Optimize Operations And Manage Budgetary Pressure
By Gabi Miles, Hach Company
Budgetary pressure on water utilities continues to grow due to factors such as new infrastructure demands, increasing regulatory compliance requirements, and the scarcity or declining quality of source water. Some utilities are addressing this challenge by reducing their operating costs through the capture and analysis of operations data, and leveraging this information to make data-driven decisions around optimization, efficiency, and time-saving opportunities.

Smart Meters Teach Consumers About Water Usage
By Joel Hoiland, CEO, Utilimetrics
Homeowners often go to great lengths to conserve electricity or use less gas or oil to heat their homes. Federal programs have offered huge rebates and tax incentives to weatherize homes, and consumers generally equate those improvements with lower utility bills. The same theory doesn't hold true when it comes to water usage. Except for some very green homeowners who are installing low-flush toilets and WaterSense faucets and appliances, few seem to place a premium on water, or seem passionate about preserving it.

CCFRPM Sliplining For Water Line Repair
By Kimberly Paggioli, PE, HOBAS Pipe, & Liz Moucka
Macomb County, MI, like most communities, has begun to face concerns over aging water infrastructure. The abundant water and fertile sandy soil that drew early settlers of the 1700s and 1800s to this area is now contributing to stormwater infrastructure collapses and sinkholes. An area that was once home to farms and villages has developed into modern communities. During urbanization after World War II, corrugated steel pipes were the material of choice for stormwater infrastructure throughout the "Steel Belt."
