MBRs Don't Have To Break The Bank

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) may have a reputation for being costly, but they don't have to be. A survey of 137 MBRs on the U.S. mainland shows that an MBR using flat plate technology is typically half to three-quarters the capital expenditure (CAPEX) of hollow fiber systems. There is some data that suggests MBR systems are competitive with several other technologies, including oxidation ditches, SBRs, MBBRs, and BNR plants.

Controlling phosphorous discharge is a key factor in preserving surface water quality. New legislation and regulations strictly limit phosphorous discharge into sensitive waters, and municipal wastewater treatment plants are now looking to membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology as a solution for phosphorous removal. MBR technology has two main advantages compared to conventional biological wastewater treatment — significantly improved effluent quality and a substantially smaller footprint.
