Springfield, NJ — Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM), a Millburn, NJ-based engineering firm, received the Grand Award in the 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards competition, sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACECNJ).

The firm was cited for its design of modifications to the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Plant that enabled the facility to open after a series of deficiencies had caused the plant to fail its acceptance test and be shut down. Following extensive testing and evaluation of the plant, HMM designed the modifications using innovative approaches to integrate new process structures in the existing plant with the least impact to the existing structures and equipment.

The Tampa Bay desalination facility was created to ensure sustainable water supply to the City of Tampa and five neighboring counties and towns. With the successful completion of the plant modifications, North America's largest seawater desalination plant has reestablished the water industry's confidence in large scale seawater desalination as a viable alternative to conventional water supply sources in coastal communities with limited natural potable water supply sources.
