Winnipeg Water Treatment Plant Takes Top Honors At ACEM Awards

Each year, the Association of Consulting Engineers of Manitoba recognizes the best in engineering by Manitoba engineering companies. This year the Winnipeg Water Treatment Plant Project received the association's Award of Excellence in the Municipal & Water Technology category. In addition, the project received the prestigious Keystone Award, which is awarded to the project selected, from the winners in all categories, as the best overall project and that represents the program's standards of excellence in Engineering in Manitoba. The awards were given to the joint team of AECOM, CH2M HILL, and the City of Winnipeg at the 2011 Awards of Excellence in Consulting Engineering gala.
"Congratulations to our project consultants, AECOM and CH2M HILL, and to all our staff that participated in and contributed to this milestone project for the Department in service to the citizens of Winnipeg," says Director of Water and Waste Barry MacBride.
The Winnipeg Water Treatment Plant is one of the most water efficient water treatment plants in the world. It is designed for environmental sustainability and high performance, and can be operated even during power outages. The water treatment processes include coagulation/flocculation, dissolved air flotation, ozonation, deep bed biologically active carbon filtration, chlorination, and UV disinfection. The design makes provision for future expansion to 600 MLD.
This $300M facility is the City's "first" water treatment plant. The processes used at the plant are the result of years of study and pilot testing. In the early-1990s, the City began an intensive analysis and testing program to define the treatment processes to be included in a new water treatment plant that best suited the raw water supply and long-term consumer needs. The multiple-barrier treatment approach provides safe, high-quality water that meets/exceeds regulatory requirements and consumer expectations for years to come.
"When the water treatment plant went on line, it was to rave reviews from consumers about the improved, taste, odour and clarity of the finished water" says Project Director Tom Pearson.
The water treatment plant was commissioned, as scheduled, in December 2009.
